Unboxing the Breitling Bentley GMT Light Body B04 S EB043335/BD78
Expectations are often lofty when brands showcase their flashy novelties at Baselworld. Of course this year is no exception, however Breitling has chosen a path of high-performance innovation and pushing its own technical limits.
Breitling says it has refined the most minute parts, materials and process improving overall weight and efficiency of its timekeeping instruments (for professionals). Much like an automaker invests millions in technology development, Breitling say these advances through Chronoworks® and Breitlight® will eventually filter down through their entire product family.
SuperOcean Heritage Chronoworks 46mm
The introduction of the Chronoworks lab seen the high-performance world of turning brought into watch making. The department have developed five major advancements which sees the Superocean Heritage Chronoworks the flagship of their year’s novelties.
Superocean Heritage is perhaps one of the brand’s more classic watches, however with its Chronoworks makeover, it evolves into a more menacing version of its former self. Dressed in all black with white numerals and on-dial markings the Superocean Heritage Chronoworks impresses more with what lies beneath.
A reworked Breitling Caliber 01 has resulted in advancements serving to reduce friction that helps reduce loss of energy in the watches movements. The result is a 100 hour power reserve which is a 45% gain on its standard self. Elements that have made this impossible are; ceramic baseplate, gear-train bridges which require less lubrication and therefore 11 fewer jewels are needed in the movement.
For its comparative size the Superocean Heritage Chronoworks weighs nothing and is a testament to the abilities Chronoworks division. The Superocean Heritage Chronoworks is set in an ominous 46mm Volcano black case and for the first time is offered with a rubber Aero Classic much like its mesh variation on the classic Superocean Heritage line. Limited to only 250 pieces, its RRP is AUD 54,260 / 38,610
Avenger Hurricane 50mm
Big is better. A series which needs no introduction has being given aHoney, I Blew Up The Kidstreatment. Where we see the Avenger Hurricane take centre stage is with it’s construction in the new Breitlight® technology. According to Breitling, this is a world-first achievement in any watch case. Why? Breitlight® is 3.3 times lighter than titanium and 5.8 times lighter than steel, but significantly harder making it more resistant to wear and scratches.
Functionality of this man-sized watch has been further enhanced with a highly legible dial with enhanced luminescent hands and numerals, a sapphire crystal glare proofed glass and fitted with a non-slip grip ensuring optimal handling even with your cheap Chinese pilot’s gloves.
Combining these features with a new level of comfort the Avenger Hurricanecomes with an exclusive strap combining yellow rubber core and sides in a high-resistance black Military textile fibre.
In the guts it has the new (and officially chronometer-certified by the COSC) manufacture Breitling Caliber B12. A selfwinding chronograph with 24-hour dial display which is customary with pilots and rugged military types.
All housed in a monster 50mm case that’s also Volcano black, 70 hour power reserve, water resistant to 100m / 330 ft and is priced at AUD 11,570 / CHF 3,235
Bentley GMT B04 S Carbon Body 45mm
Evolution not revolution. Having never seen its predecessor we’re shocked by the new Bentley GMT B04 S Carbon Body, not for its appearance but it’s lack of size. The Breitling for Bentley family is not known for its small stature but the B04 series bucks this trend and has a well-balanced on-wrist presence.
Again, we see this release being a focus on technology advancement through its case construction. The material is composed of small carbon fibres woven into hundreds of layers. The layers are placed at a 45-degree angle between each successive layers and bonded with heat-set resin. The result is Formula 1 grade material and high-performance shock-resistance all in a matte-black ‘your ass in mine’ finish.
The GMT B04 S Carbon Body offers a dual time zone for the everyday traveller, with simple functionality to change both time zones without losing precision of time. Of course a must when driving a Bentley.
