This picture was actually taken in Israel, for a bathing suit campaign. I wish my legs still looked like that. I was 17—it's before Mom got her face-lift—and I'd been modeling my whole life. At this point I was almost retired! My mother came on all my shoots, and we went everywhere together. I didn't have any other agents or managers or anything. I wasn't even with Ford anymore; I had left and gone off on my own.

My mother was always fixing my hair or poking at me, or motioning at me to do something. I was her little doll. But I love our smiles in this picture; they're both very genuine. And look at the body language: I have complete surrender. My arms are back, my hands are clasped, and I have no intention of interfering. If I tried to do this with my kids, they'd push me away like, "Stop, Mom!" I watch my girls now, and how different they are from me. They don't look at me the way I looked at my mother. I don't wring out their hair out at the beach—I wring their necks!

This picture is so indicative of what I've written about in my book. My mother was completely committed to me. She loved me so intensely, like a pet, or something you just adore—you love it, you play with it, you don't ever want it to go away or get hurt or stolen or to change. Also, you can see the sense of humor. The laughter was there all the time. It was the through line of the relationship. Even in tougher times, or bad experiences when she was being difficult, all it would take was one of our shared laughs to save everything. It reset the clock; it was the antidote.

My book stemmed from my mother's death, and my relationship with my own daughters. The funny thing is, now I'll hear myself saying something my mother would have said, both good and bad. A mother informs you. It's a primal relationship: What would she think? I don't want to do what she thinks. I'm not going to think about what she thinks. Which is still thinking about what she's thinking about! Everything I ever did was in reference or regard to her.

As told to Laura Brown

This month, Brooke Shields will release a makeup collection with M.A.C.; her new book,There Was a Little Girl: The Real Story of My Mother and Me, will be published by Penguin Group in November.
