How to make beautiful figures from salt dough?

Dough is not only what they make from tasty and rich buns, but also surprisingly plastic material for creating various figures. Of the salted dough, toys for children, hand-made articles, sculptures and even a variety of architectural works - churches, famous world structures, monuments of architecture are also made.

And all this is easy and affordable on a miniature scale with the help of ordinary salted dough. By its properties, the dough resembles plasticine - soft, easy to sculpt and crushed, and also does not stain hands. Such a set of useful properties allows you to create figures of high quality salt dough.

The plastic properties of dough have long been known. Our ancestors also sculpted various figures of larks and other animals from it, festive bread with which they met spring and winter holidays, they gave to their relatives and children.

Over time, such crafts have grown into a whole art, now such hand-made souvenirs are very much appreciated and are in demand.

Dough modeling is a fascinating activity not only for adults but also for children, because you can create simple figures like flowers, leaves, apples, small animals, as well as more complex figures, and their compositions architectural structures, portraits , trees and others. It should be borne in mind that the figures of the dough are quite heavy, so it is better to do with small items.

What do we need?

There is no one recipe for a dough for modeling. There are recipes in which vegetable oil is added, but the figures will leave greasy marks.

There are recipes in which it is advised to add vinyl glue, but with such dough it is better to be careful, especially if you are engaged in modeling with children, because they like to pull everything in their mouths. It is best to use the most simple and environmentally friendly recipe: we need flour, salt and water.

The quality and plastic properties of the dough may depend on the flour. Best of all, the dough is obtained from cheap wheat flour.

After all, vitamins and supplements that are present in high-grade flour are not important to us, they undergo special treatments for this, which can negatively affect the properties of the dough.

The dough made of rye wheat will be harder and more difficult to dry. You can mix several varieties of flour. Salt can be used any, even the cheapest. It is added in order to protect the salt dough figurines from harmful insects and rodents. A large amount is not required, and the dough after drying can become brittle and brittle, can cause cracks in the finished products.

To create light, and not very, salty dough pieces, you can apply different methods of staining. Thus, brighter and various hand-made articles turn out.

Coloring, traditionally, is made after the end of the modeling, but you can add paint right in the process of kneading the dough.

Suitable as food dyes, and acrylic, gouache paints. To give the dough a beautiful coffee tint, it is suitable and soluble coffee or cocoa.

After you knead the dough, check if it sticks strongly to your hands, then add some more flour, if, on the contrary, it is too tight, then add water. When the composition of the test suits you, roll it into a ball and fold it into a plastic bag. We put the finished dough in the fridge for 2-3 hours, however, the cooling time may be different, depending on what recipe you chose.

As the dough cools, you can prepare the work surface. Decide in advance what kind of figure or crafts you will do.

To create figures of salt dough, we may need: a rolling pin, a place for rolling dough, a brush, a sharp knife, a pencil and other little things that every house probably has.

Crafts

Now that we are fully prepared, we can proceed to the modeling. If you decide to make a flat figure, then roll the dough sheet with a rolling pin, think about what elements you will need to do. At first we sculpt smaller elements, then large ones. We give parts a little dry and combine them together.

To ensure that the joints are not too visible, wet the brush and press with your fingers. Thus, it is possible to make relatively simple figures from salt dough. You can try to make crafts from a single piece of dough, this is a more complicated way, but you can get the most voluminous and realistic figures.

Once your figure is ready, it must be dried. If it is small, no more than a centimeter thick, then it can be dried at room temperature.Larger products must be dried at low temperatures in the oven. When the product is dried, I want it to play and start pouring, for this it needs to be glazed.

It is necessary to glaze a figure within an hour. To do this, you will need a strong saline solution, in proportions of 2: 1, water and salt, respectively.

Using a brush, we lubricate the product with a solution and send it to the furnace. Depending on the temperature at which you will dry the product, the product will turn white, beige or golden brown. The higher the temperature, the brighter the shade, you can dry at a temperature of from 50 ° to 200 °.

When the first layer of glazing dries, we lubricate the product again and repeat it for an hour. Glazing can be done not only with salt, but, for example, with the help of egg yolk and water, or beet syrup, diluted with water.

Consider the manufacture of three-dimensional figures of salt dough on the example of the meadow of mushrooms.

Process description

We knead the dough, it should come out pretty dense, so that the mushrooms keep the shape. For each fungus will need two balls, one of which will be a hat, and the other - a foot.

Sculpt a hat with a dimple in the center from one ball, and a leg from the other ball, which should be slightly narrowed at the top. We combine the details of our mushroom. Mold a few large and a couple of medium fungi, so that the glade looks diverse, dry the mushrooms in the oven.

When our mushrooms are dried, you can show imagination and color their caps, both in real and in the most unreal colors. The legs of mushrooms are colored with white acrylic or gouache paints. Glade ready!

Do not despair if it seems to you that your figures are too childish. Over time, having gained experience, you can move to more complex figures and products. In this kind of art, the main thing is patience and perseverance, since it takes a lot of time to make such figures, but the result will not please you.
