How to write a thesis?
Education of each student in the university ends with the defense of the thesis. But how to write a thesis correctly, so that there are no returns for revision, not everyone knows.
What is a thesis?
First of all, let's define what is a thesis. This is the final work of a senior student of research character. First of all, the thesis is a written work, which is distinguished by a high degree of importance, because it is for her that the commission will judge how well the student has mastered the knowledge. Graduates write a thesis and defend it in the last year, while in some schools (mostly full-time education) the last semester is completely free from classes for writing a thesis. So, it is time to move from theory to practice, namely to specific recommendations on how to write a thesis correctly.
The structure of the thesis and its scope
Traditionally, the thesis consists of:
- table of contents (content);
- the main part (2 or 3 sections);
- practical (project) part;
- conclusions (conclusions);
The volume of the thesis is an average of 60-70 pages of computer text in Times New Roman format (12-14) with one and a half intervals. However, the structure (as well as the volume) may differ from the above. It all depends on the university where you study.
The main stages of writing a diploma
If you have already decided on the topic and it was approved by the department (an internal order is issued), you can safely begin to write a thesis. This process can be divided into several main stages:
- search for sources on the topic of work and their study;
- drawing up a plan (content) for a thesis (below are some practical tips on how to write a plan for a thesis);
- writing introduction and main part;
- implementation of the practical (project) part;
- writing a conclusion;
- preparation of the list of references and applications.
Usually, a student’s diploma plan is under the control of his or her academic advisor. However, if the teacher is not in a hurry to give you tangible support, you do not lose anything.In this case, you should compile the content yourself and refer it to the manager for approval. If something in terms of confusing your supervisor, he will absolutely tell you the right option.
Did your trick fail and the teacher sent you back to work on the plan? Well, then there is nothing left but to stock up on training materials and patience, to make a plan for yourself again. You can borrow (not literally, of course) an interesting scheme according to which your topic is covered in textbooks, or you can create your own scheme by resorting to one of the many tutorials on writing graduation papers.
After the plan of the thesis is finally drawn up and even approved by the supervisor, it is time to work on the text. Of course, the first question that confronts a student who has started writing a thesis is: how to write an introduction to a thesis?
The introduction includes a general description of the work: here the student must substantiate the reason for choosing the topic and prove its relevance at the current moment, as well as present the goals and objectives of his research,mention the practical significance of the work (that is, how the conclusions to be drawn from the study can be used in practice).
It will not be superfluous to give a definition of the subject of the research in the introduction and to clarify the methodology, listing the methods that were used in researching the topic of the thesis. It should also be remembered that the introduction should not take more than three to five pages of the total amount of work. Let's open the secret: a well-composed introduction will allow you to save time on preparing for protection. To prepare for the defense, an abbreviated version of the introduction can be used in its report.
The main part of the diploma, as already mentioned above, contains several sections (as a rule, from two to four). Sections must be divided into subheadings. It is recommended to follow the sequence and logic of the presentation of the material, it will also be useful (if necessary) to illustrate the material with the help of visual tables, diagrams and reviews. We should not also forget about references in the form of footnotes to sources of information (in particular, it concerns quotations cited in the work). Without footnotes, your thesis will not be accepted by the supervisor.
The main part consists of theory and practice. First comes the theoretical part in which you must uncover the theoretical scientific basis used for the study. There should not be anything superfluous, that which you have not used in practice. Write the theoretical part logically and consistently, moving from general to more detailed questions. The practical part - the most important thing in the thesis work. Here you have to submit your research, written based on theoretical knowledge. If we talk about the volumes of both parts, then the practical part should be larger than the theoretical one.
In conclusion, it is necessary to give conclusions to which the author came in during his research. You can also mention the practical significance of the work and the prospects for further study of this topic. Very often, students pay little attention to the conclusion of a thesis. And in vain! Conclusion is a very important part of the work as a whole.
References and applications
After the conclusion is traditionally followed by a list of references. It should include not only your textbooks and special scientific literature, but alsoFor example, articles from the Internet with links to them and dates and other sources that you had to resort to during the writing of the work. The list may include at least 30, and often all 50-60 items.
It is important that more than half of the sources used are noted in the main part in the form of footnotes. The order of registration of sources and footnotes approved a special standard. If you doubt how to write a thesis, so that everything is done correctly, then you need to take a special training manual at the department, which sets out the rules for the thesis. The volume of applications to the diploma is unlimited. The main thing is that they are numbered and have a direct relationship to the subject of the study.
So, we tried to summarize the basic principles of writing a thesis. We wish you success!
