The Third Presidential Debate: Hillary Clinton And Donald Trump (Full Debate) | NBC News
It's no secret that maternity leave policies in this country aren't always what they should be—isDonald Trumpthe unlikely presidential candidate who hopes to fix this?
The nominee formally proposed a federal policy under which new moms would be guaranteed up to six weeks of paid leave. Campaign officials said that his daughter,Ivanka Trump, was involved in the creation of the proposal, and she appeared by her father's side while he delivered it.
Trump cited the problematic nature of child care in this country when speaking. "We need working mothers to be fairly compensated for their work and have access to affordable, quality child care for their kids. That's what we're doing," he said. Under Trump's proposed plan, individuals making up to 0,000 a year and couples bringing in up to 0,000 would also be eligible for a childcare cost deductible on income taxes.
Trump's proposal represents a significant change from current federal policy, under which women are entitled to 12 weeks ofunpaidleave. It's also at odds with the Republican parties stance.
Hillary Clintonhas proposed a federal maternity leave policy of her own—her plan includes 12 weeks of paid leave and benefits for new fathers and adoptive parents as well as birth mothers.
But some critics of the plan are pointing out that Trump's plan may lead employers to discriminate against women.
